Synopsis:

This film is based on the Korean modern literature by Joo Yo-seop and directed by Shin Sang-ok, a key figure who helped usher in the Golden Age of South Korean cinema in the 1960s.

Told through the eyes of six-year-old young girl Ok-hee, the story unfolds in a quiet guesthouse where she lives with her widowed mother, grandmother, and housekeeper. When a friend of her late father arrives, Ok-hee, longing for a father figure, hopes to bring him and her mother together.

Set in a traditional hanok, the film’s elegant black-and-white cinematography contrasts the openness of the outdoors with the emotional restraint of its confined interior spaces. It delicately captures the unspoken connection between a reserved artist and a young widow, while reflecting the social atmosphere of the time—when widows were expected to remain loyal to their late husband’s and forbidden from seeking new love.

A poetic and visually beautiful gem in the history of Korean cinema, the film remains a quiet yet powerful reflection on desire, loss, and the weight of tradition.

Makgeolli & Pajeon

Makgeolli is Korea’s traditional rice wine, made from fermented rice and nuruk (a fermentation starter). With its soft fizz, creamy texture, and mildly sweet taste, it has long been a favorite comfort alcoholic drink of Koreans, especially enjoyed with pajeon on rainy days.

Pajeon is a savory Korean pancake made with Pa(Spring onions) and various seafood in a crispy batter. It’s warm, hearty, and packed with flavor — the perfect match for a glass of makgeolli.
