KCCN November Book Discussion: Almond by Won-Pyung Sohn
- Post DateNov 04, 2026

What does it mean to feel? Is it something we are born knowing, or something we learn through our encounters with other people?
This November, we invite you to explore these questions through Almond by Won-pyung Sohn.
The novel follows Yunjae, a young boy born with a neurological condition called alexithymia, which makes it difficult for him to recognise and express emotions. Because of underdeveloped amygdalae, commonly associated with emotional processing, he struggles to understand fear, anger, happiness and sadness in the ways others do.
Raised by his mother and grandmother, Yunjae learns to navigate a world that often misunderstands him. But when an unexpected tragedy changes his life, and he crosses paths with Gon, a troubled boy carrying his own emotional wounds, his understanding of human connection begins to evolve.
Almond is a moving exploration of empathy, emotional expression, friendship, trauma and what it means to be human. It challenges us to consider whether our ability to understand one another depends on feeling the same things or simply being willing to see one another.
Let's Talk About It!
