1:00 PM – 2:00 PM | Poetry Workshop
Step into the world of one of Korea's most beloved and courageous literary voices. This interactive workshop centres on the life and works of Yun Dong-ju, a young Korean poet who wrote with extraordinary beauty and quiet defiance during the Japanese colonial era. His poems, written in the face of oppression, remain some of the most treasured works in Korean literary history.
During the workshop, attendees will:
Discover the story of Yun Dong-ju;his life, his struggles, and his legacy as a symbol of resistance and artistic courage
Explore Korean resistance poetry and understand how poets used their verses as powerful tools of identity, protest, and hope during one of Korea's darkest periods
Read two of Yun Dong-ju's iconic poems, which will be displayed on screen for everyone to experience together
Create original artwork. After reading the poems, attendees will be invited to draw or sketch anything the words inspire in them no artistic experience required, just an open heart and imagination!
This workshop is designed to be engaging, reflective, and deeply personal; a space where history, literature, and creativity come together.
2:00 PM – 4:00 PM | Film Screening — Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet
The poetry workshop leads beautifully into our film screening the critically acclaimed Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet (동주, 2016), directed by Lee Joon-ik. Shot in stunning black and white, the film brings to life the story of Yun Dong-ju and his cousin Song Mongyu, two young men bound by friendship, dreams, and the harsh realities of colonial rule.
It is a film about what it means to remain true to your voice when the world tries to silence you and a deeply moving tribute to the enduring power of poetry.
Why Attend?
Whether you are a poetry lover, a film enthusiast, a student, or simply curious about Korean culture, Rhymes & Reels promises an afternoon that is as enriching as it is entertaining. Come with an open mind, leave with a new perspective.
