Kukkiwon Demonstration Team Delivers Special Performance, Celebrating Korea–Nigeria Friendship Through Taekwondo
ABUJA, Nigeria – The Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN) successfully held the 14th Korean Ambassador's Cup Taekwondo Championship from 23 to 25 October 2026 at MO Arena in Abuja, bringing together 265 participants for three days of competition and cultural exchange.
The championship welcomed several distinguished guests, including H.E. Jeong Yo-an, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Nigeria; Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission; the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Nigeria; and members of the diplomatic corps. A major highlight of this year's event was a special performance by the Kukkiwon Taekwondo Demonstration Team from Korea.
The Kukkiwon team captivated the audience with a dynamic display of powerful kicks, impressive aerial techniques and precision movements, showcasing both the athletic excellence and artistic appeal of Taekwondo. The performance offered Nigerian audiences an opportunity to experience the discipline, strength and cultural heritage of Korea's traditional martial art.
Speaking at the Grand Finals and Closing Ceremony on 25 October, Ambassador Jeong encouraged young athletes to embrace perseverance, discipline and respect, drawing on Korea's journey of recovery and development following colonial rule and the Korean War.
Sharing his personal experience of beginning Taekwondo training at the age of eleven in 1973, Ambassador Jeong reminded the athletes that setbacks should never define their future.
"Your difficulties today do not have to define your tomorrow. And losing a match does not mean losing your future," he said.
The Ambassador also highlighted Taekwondo's potential to empower young people, particularly those in underserved communities, by building confidence, character and a sense of purpose. He expressed hope that Korea and Nigeria, together with Kukkiwon and the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, could explore opportunities to make Taekwondo more accessible to young people across the country.
Shin Jae-geun, Kukkiwon Board Member and Head of the Kukkiwon Taekwondo Demonstration Team, described Taekwondo as more than a sport, emphasising its role in promoting mutual respect and bringing people and nations together.
"We hope our performance will bring joy and excitement to everyone and strengthen the friendship between Korea and Nigeria," he said.
Beyond the competition, the championship provided a platform for athletes to demonstrate their skills, celebrate sportsmanship and strengthen friendships. The Kukkiwon team's special performance further highlighted Taekwondo's role as a bridge for cultural understanding and exchange between Korea and Nigeria.
Juho Jeon, Director of the Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria, said, "This year's championship provided a meaningful opportunity for Nigerian athletes to showcase their abilities while experiencing the excellence and cultural value of Korean Taekwondo through the Kukkiwon Demonstration Team's special performance."
"We will continue to promote sports and cultural exchanges between Korea and Nigeria through Taekwondo," he added.
