Expanding Cultural Exchange through K-POP
The Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN), headed by Director Jeon Joo-ho, held the 2026 K-POP Festival on Saturday, June 20, at Terra Kulture in Lagos. The event was organised as the Nigerian regional preliminary round to select candidates for the 2026 KBS K-POP World Festival in Changwon, Korea.
The festival provided an opportunity for young Nigerians to experience Korean popular culture through K-POP and to connect with one another through music, dance, and shared creativity. The event drew more than 400 attendees, including K-POP fans, contestants, cultural and arts professionals, and members of the public, demonstrating the strong interest in Korean popular culture in Nigeria.
In his opening remarks, Director Jeon Joo-ho said, “In 2026, the Korean Wave is no longer just a passing trend, but a global cultural movement that connects people around the world.” He added, “At the heart of this movement is K-POP, which brings people together across continents through music, dance, creativity, and the passion of fans.”
Reflecting the growing popularity of K-POP in Nigeria, the festival featured seven vocal contestants and ten dance teams selected through an online preliminary round. The finalists performed on stage in Lagos, expressing their passion for K-POP through vocal performances and dance routines, while reinterpreting K-POP songs and choreography in their own creative styles.
The local competition was judged by two Korean experts: K-POP producer Professor Lee Han-eung and Seo Yena, Vocal Director of the K-Music Production Afrobeats Masterclass hosted by KCCN in February. They were joined by Nigerian dancer Praise Nelson, winner of the Grand Prize at the 2015 K-POP World Festival final stage, who has also served as a Hallyu ambassador. The judging panel evaluated the contestants based on stage composition, expression, choreography interpretation, and vocal performance.
The audience responded enthusiastically throughout the festival, cheering and applauding each performance. The event highlighted how K-POP has become more than a music genre for young Nigerians, serving as a platform for creative self-expression and cultural exchange.
Following the final evaluation, THE KINGSMEN won first place in the dance category, while KRI8TIFZ placed second. In the vocal category, Mary Isibhakhome Obidudu won first place. The top two dance teams and the first-place vocal winner will advance to the audition stage for the 2026 KBS K-POP World Festival in Changwon, with their final qualification for the main stage to be determined through a global video screening process.
Director Jeon further stated, “KCCN is currently providing opportunities for young Nigerians to learn and experience Korean popular culture directly through programmes such as the K-POP Academy and K-POP classes in public schools.” He added, “We will continue to expand our engagement with young Nigerians through K-POP and other Korean cultural programmes, while strengthening cultural exchange between Korea and Nigeria.”
