13th Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship Held in Abuja

Event strengthens Korea–Nigeria friendship and youth engagement through Taekwondo


Abuja, Nigeria – The Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN), in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF), successfully hosted the 13th Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship from October 17 to 19, 2025 at the Indoor Sports Hall, Package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
 
This year’s championship brought together over 270 athletes from across Nigeria to compete in Kyorugi (sparring), Poomsae, and Freestyle Poomsae categories. As the largest Taekwondo event in Nigeria, the tournament has become a hallmark of sports diplomacy, promoting friendship and cultural exchange between Korea and Nigeria while empowering young athletes.
 
The awards ceremony was attended by Mr. Namkoong Tak, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea; Mr. Jeon Juho, Director of the Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria; Mr. Temitayo Popoola, President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation; and Mr. Mbora Ikanna, Director of the Federation and Elite Athletes Department, Ministry of Sports Development. They presented trophies and medals to the winners and encouraged the participants for their dedication and sportsmanship.
 
In his congratulatory remarks, Mr. Namkoong Tak highlighted the significance of Taekwondo as a bridge of friendship between the two nations, stating,
“Taekwondo serves not only as a symbol of our enduring friendship but also as a platform that inspires dreams and hope among young Nigerians. Through this championship, we hope to see more Nigerian youth pursue their future with passion and discipline.”
 
Mr. Temitayo Popoola, President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, added,
“This event goes beyond competition—it embodies the spirit of friendship, cooperation, and youth empowerment shared by Nigeria and Korea. Thanks to the continued support from the Korean Government and the Korean community in Nigeria, our young athletes are gaining opportunities to compete internationally.”
 
Mr. Jeon Juho, Director of KCCN, emphasized the Centre’s long-term commitment to sports and youth exchange, saying,
“The Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria will continue to support the development of Taekwondo in the host country through regular training programs, Taekwondo promotion in public schools, and equipment donation projects. We will also expand youth exchange initiatives and regional competitions to further strengthen sports diplomacy and youth capacity-building between our two nations.”
