Janggu: Stimulating interest in drumming, creativity

This 5th edition of Janggu Drum Workshop, like the previous editions, had the trappings of creative exploration, showcasing the socio-cultural significance of drum, in this case, the Janggu – traditional Korean hourglass-shaped drum.

The Janggu is the most representative drum in traditional Korean music. It is available in most kinds, and consists of an hourglass-shaped body with two heads made from animal skin.

The 5th edition, aptly titled Surulere Edition, together dancers and drummers who were upbeat at honing their skills in Janggu drum over a period of about three months. It was no doubt a cross-cultural expression showing how the Janggu Workshop is building bridges across culture – Korea and Nigeria. This was brought to the fore at the graduation ceremony of the participants of the 5th edition of Janggu Drum Training Workshop, initiated and facilitated by one of Nigeria’s leading drummers, Isioma Williams, in collaboration with the Korean Cultural Centre, Nigeria (KCCN).

The Janggu is the most representative drum in traditional Korean music. It is available in most kinds, and consists of an hourglass-shaped body with two heads made from animal skin. 

The Villa Jazzmatazz, Ogunlana lane, Surulere, Lagos, echoed with rhythms and sounds of drumming, as participants thrilled guests to rich drumming sessions. Highlights of the event include presentation of certificates to participants as well as special awards to deserving participants. There was also a special performance by youngsters who were able to produce similar sound effect beating empty 25 litres containers, which they have converted into drums of sort.

Dignitaries at the event include: the Director, Korean Cultural Centre in Nigeria, Lee, Jin Su; former Director, Drama, National Troupe of Nigeria, Ms. Josephine Igberaese; Executive director at Arocsa and research fellow at Hanover institute and Goethe Universitat, Dr. Ndidi Nwaneri; notable artiste and pioneer member of the National Troupe of Nigeria, Mr. Kayoed Idris; celebrated dancer, choreographer, former president of GOND and the CEO of IJODEE Dance Centre, Mr. AdedayoLiadi; art activist and CEO of Q-Dance Centre, Mr. Qudus Onikeku; national secretary of the Guild of Nigerian Dancers (GOND), Tairu Ajibode and others.

In an interview, the Director, Korean Cultural Centre in Nigeria, Lee, Jin Su, commended Williams for the workshop noting that the Centre is committed to supporting the Janggu Drum workshop.

as a means of promoting cultural dialogue between both countries.
