KCCN Celebrates Seollal 2017 in New Edifice


The Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria marked Seollal (The Lunar New Year) on January 26, 2017 in a wonderful way. Many Nigerians and other nationals were present as newly remodeled Exhibition Hall played host to its first event since the re-modelling ended. Korean New Year is the first day of the Korean Lunar Calendar. It is one of the most significant traditional Korean holidays. The celebration lasts three days: the day before Korean New Year day, Korean New Year day itself, and the day after Korean New Year day. KCCN Director, Mr. Han Sungrae welcomed people to the event and briefly explained the essence of Seollal.  The event also involved playing Korean folk games like Yutnori, Jegichagi and Tuho. 


Yutnori: this game involves the use of 4 wooden sticks flat on one side and rounded on the other, the game board and 8 playing tokens for each team.


Jegichagi: Requires the use of Peoples foot and an object called Jegi it looks like badminton, which is made of a small coin(quarter size), paper, or cloth. The player kicks a jegi up in the air and keeps on kicking to prevent from falling to the ground. In a one-to-one game, a player with the most number of consecutive kicks wins.


Tuho: This game requires the use of a wooden arrow and a narrow necked pot, each player attempts to target to throw this arrow into this narrow pot, the Tuho player with the highest score wins the game. A fully prepared refreshment followed where Korean snacks, Biscuits and Nigerian snacks were served.
